Silica Gel


Silica gel a porous, amorphous form of silica (SiO2). It can effectively satisfy most desiccant air dryer applications, particularly the dehydration of compressed air and natural gas. The desiccant silica gel bead /granule shape, uniform particle size and high bulk density combine to ensure optimum air/gas flow without nesting or channeling. Minimal dusting occurs due to the hard, smooth, spherical/lumpy shape of the silica desiccant beads/granules. Desiccant silica gel is an excellent option for applications requiring long-term economy, higher capacity, premium performance and energy savings.

As opposed to zeolites, silica gels have larger pores with a wide range of diameters and do not allow for the separation of molecules solely dependent on their size. It is possible to adjust the pore size range in the manufacturing process:

  • Silica gels synthesized with an average pore size of about 20-30Å are known as narrow pore silica gels
  • Silica gels with an average pore size of about 80 - 100Å and beyond are called wide pore silica gels

Narrow pore and wide pore silica gels exhibit different stability against liquid water. Liquid water can lead to a destruction of the silica gel pores in case of a narrow pore silica gel, while wide pore silica gel is not affected by the presence of liquids.

In addition, due to the lower adsorption forces, silica gel is also easier to regenerate.
